Why did I choose to do this?

When I was a child, my family didn't have much money, so toys were something we rarely bought.

But my father sometimes carved small wooden animals for me, and my grandfather — a sailor living near the sea — made larger wooden toys whenever I visited his coastal village.

These were the first toys I truly loved.

But the person who most influenced my childhood was my grandfather.

He lived in the countryside while I grew up in the city, so I could only visit him occasionally.

Each time I came back to see him, he had something waiting for me — a wooden toy he had hand-carved.

These weren't small decorations. They were large wooden toys that a child could actually play with.

Sometimes they were animals. Sometimes strange and playful creations.

My favorite was a large wooden sword shaped like a fish, almost like something a knight might carry in a story.

For others, it might have seemed simple.

But for me, it was incredible.

I took it everywhere and proudly showed it to my friends.

Those were probably the simplest and happiest days of my life.

As he grew up, life became busier, and those childhood days slowly faded from memory.

Then, when I was in college, my grandfather became ill with dementia.

Gradually, the memories in his mind began to fade.

One day, he looked at me, confused, and could no longer recognize who I was.

I will never forget that moment.

He died shortly afterwards.

Years later, I returned to the old house in the countryside and tried to find those wooden toys.

I looked everywhere — drawers, boxes, corners of the house.

But I couldn't find them.

They were probably lost somewhere during childhood.

This has become one of the biggest regrets of my life.

Because what I had really lost wasn't just a few wooden toys.

It was part of my childhood, and of my grandfather's love.

Before I had a chance to grow up and thank him, he was already gone.

Later in life, carrying this regret and these memories with me, I began to carve wooden animals myself.

I wanted to carve something deeper into the wood — the simple joy of childhood, the love of family, the silent poetry of life.

Because when we grow older and look back on our lives, the most precious things are never those we possessed.

These are the memories and emotions we have shared with the people we love.

That's why I create these pieces.

I hope that one day you will give one to someone dear to you.

A little reminder to spread love while we still can.

So that when we look back one day, our lives will be filled with memories — not regrets.

This was the beginning of MARINER POET .

Who are we ?

My family roots are in Dongyang, a city in eastern China long known for its woodcarving tradition.

Dongyang wood carving has a history of over a thousand years and is recognized as one of the four great wood carving traditions of China. In 2013, Dongyang was named the "World Capital of Wood Carving" by an international panel of experts.

Today, the city remains the largest center for woodcraft and rosewood furniture in China, with generations of artisans perpetuating its rich heritage of carving.

Having grown up in this environment, wood carving has always been a quiet presence in my life. Watching wood slowly transform into animals, stories, and living forms by patient hands has shaped my view of wood today — not just as a material, but as something capable of holding memory, imagination, and life.

Later in life, I also had the opportunity to exchange ideas with many wood sculptors and craftspeople from Europe and North America. These conversations opened up another perspective: the artistic language of wood.

Since then, I have been exploring how the refined craftsmanship of Dongyang wood carving can meet the artistic sensibilities of Western design — combining tradition and imagination to create wooden works that speak across cultures.

This exploration eventually became part of what MARINER POET is today.

Mariner Poet is an international design-focused brand dedicated to handmade kinetic art.

The brand is officially registered in the United States and operates through creative and development teams located in several countries. This global structure allows us to approach each project with a clear creative identity while remaining open to diverse cultural perspectives.

Our handcrafted pieces are created through long-term collaboration with our key partners. Mariner Poet works closely with several professional studios—not as suppliers, but as creative partners sharing authorship, responsibility for design, and craftsmanship.

Our way of creating

Mariner Poet never aimed for mass production or static products.

Most of our works begin with creative concepts and narratives initiated by Mariner Poet , which are then designed, refined, and handcrafted in collaboration with our studio partners. Design, engineering, and craftsmanship are considered a continuous and evolving process.

Some pieces may appear on different platforms during their initial phases as part of a creative exploration and real-world testing process. This allows us to understand how a work lives beyond the studio—how it moves, how people react to it, and how it evolves over time.

At the same time, as our designs gain visibility, unauthorized imitations may also appear on certain platforms . These products are neither produced, selected, nor endorsed by Mariner Poet, and do not reflect our standards of materials, craftsmanship, or creative intent.

For us, originality is not defined by a unique presence.
It is defined by the creative author — who initiates the idea, shapes the narrative, and guides the creation, finishing, and understanding of a work.

Looking towards the future

As Mariner Poet continues to grow, our focus gradually expands.

We are exploring new directions through:

At the same time, we hope to contribute to a wider ecosystem around kinetic wood art.

Our ambition is not simply to create more parts.

It's about helping to cultivate a living landscape of wooden art.

So that each work carries a deeper sense of place, meaning, and identity.
